The UK government has announced an extension to the Household Support Fund, providing vital assistance to vulnerable households during the winter months. The extension, confirmed by Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall, will allocate an additional £421m to local authorities in England, helping those struggling with the rising costs of energy, food and water. The funding will be available until April 2025.

Local councils will continue to offer immediate support to those in need, including pensioners and others who may have difficulty heating their homes or affording other essential items. Residents are encouraged to contact their local authorities to learn more about the assistance available. The fund is not limited to emergency relief; it also supports initiatives like providing key appliances, school uniforms and energy efficiency improvements through partnerships with local charities and community groups.

In addition to the support in England, £79m will be allocated to the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland through the Barnett formula. These administrations will have the discretion to distribute the funds as they see fit, ensuring that no part of the UK is left without support.

This extension is part of the Government’s broader mission to rebuild the economy and ensure financial security for all. The Household Support Fund is seen as a crucial lifeline, particularly as the country faces a challenging winter ahead.
