HMRC has confirmed it will accept tax relief claims from people who had to work from home due to the coronavirus during the current financial year.

The relief is available to workers who are only able to work from home due to the coronavirus.

More than three million claims were filed by 550,000 people in 2020/21.

You can either claim tax relief on £6 per week or the extra amount of costs incurred by working from home above this amount, provided evidence such as receipts and bills are provided.

Things that home workers can claim tax relief for include gas and electricity, metered water, business phone calls and dial-up internet access.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's director-general for customer services, commented:

"Half a million people have already reduced their income tax this year by up to £125, by claiming tax relief on their working from home expenses.

"We want everyone who's eligible to benefit, so we've made it quick and easy to do online."
